Recipes for when you're about to get engaged but don't know it
Did this last meal seal the deal? You be the judge
Hello, chefs.
Mr. Recipes for When did a very big thing last weekend.
We picked out the requisite jewelry together a few months ago, and there were some subtle clues that it might be getting placed on my hand on Sunday (his mom visiting? going to my brother’s for brunch? oooooook), but I will never be over the absolute shock of seeing everyone who didn’t pick up the phone when I called to tell them we’re engaged yelling “surprise!!!!!!” when I walked in the door.
People say weddings are whirlwinds but man, I can’t imagine a day more chaotic good than that one.
On Friday night, when I was still a regular degular unbetrothed woman, I made the steak recipe below with the corn salad I shared a few weeks ago and some grilled sourdough for dinner. It was like frighteningly good, a perfect summer meal: light and fresh with great summer flavors. Causation? Correlation? Who’s to say?

Grilled steak with charred tomatoes and Worcestershire butter
This recipe by Melissa Clark calls for flank steak, which we couldn’t find, so used sirloins and it was delicious.
At least two hours before you want to eat, salt and pepper your steak and marinate it in:
fresh thyme or oregano and chives
lots of grated garlic
a minced jalepeño
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp lemon juice
Also in advance, make your Worcestershire butter. Mix up in a bowl:
1 stick softened butter
fresh thyme or oregano and chives
2 tsp Worcestershire butter
a bit of minced garlic
grated zest of 1 lemon
salt and pepper
A bit before eating, make your charred tomatoes and scallions:
Grill ~3 tomatoes until they get a nice char on a few sides. Let cool
Chop up 3 scallions and put in a bowl with some salt, pepper, a squeeze of lemon juice, and fresh basil
When they’re cool, rough chop your tomatoes and mix them in
Grill your steak!
Brush off the marinade, pat it dry, and coat lightly with oil
~Grill it the way you do~ (I’m not the lady to guide you on this)
While you let it rest, spoon the butter on top so it starts to melt
Plate it! Sliced steak, melting butter, tomato mixture—yum.
For old times’ sake: the chocolate chip cookies that got us here
I’ve shared these before—they’re the cookies I used to send my ~betrothed~ off on tour with that I’m pretty sure are responsible for our entire relationship.
Preheat your oven to 375 (alternatively, you can freeze the balls of dough and pop them in the oven whenever you want.
In a standing mixer, combine until creamy:
1 1/4 cups brown sugar
3/4 cups butter flavored crisco
Add and mix:
1 egg
2 tbsp milk (any, and even water works if you don’t have it)
1 tbsp vanilla
Add and mix:
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
3/4 tsp baking soda
Add and mix:
chocolate chips: I usually use 3/4 of a bag
Bake for 10 minutes and sprinkle with salt
